So How Profitable Dropshipping Business Is? Is It Dead?

If you’ve been in the eCommerce industry for a long time, you may have heard of rumors circling around for years now that basically say dropshipping is no longer profitable. Or worst, dropshipping is dead.

As I said, you hear them at every start of the year. It never gets old, really.

The reality is that such a claim is utter nonsense, and there’s no truth to this at all. In fact, eCommerce is on the rise since the mid-90s. And it was predicted to progressively grow steadily in the following years.

In the last eight years or so, it was found that eCommerce is a $4 billion industry!

Anyway, I will discuss this topic much extensively in the next sections and explain how profitable dropshipping business is.

So without any further delays, let’s get right into today’s topic…

What is Dropshipping? And how it works?

Dropshipping is an eCommerce business that uses a retail fulfillment method.

In dropshipping, the setting is that the store owner doesn’t store the inventories themselves and does not handle them directly.

The practice is that they will hire a third-party supplier or manufacturer that ensures the quality assurance of the products, their packaging, and the logistics process.

The dropshipper focuses on the marketing strategy and customer service aspect of the business.

That’s basically how dropshipping works. And since you don’t directly deal with inventory management and the expenses related to this particular operation, your potential income as a dropshipper is very promising.

Therefore, such an eCommerce platform makes them extremely enticing for people who want to maximize their profits. Also, they are perfect for beginners since you wouldn’t need that many resources.

If you’re new to the idea of dropshipping, take note that 33% of online retail stores you find on the internet, especially to social media networks, are operating a dropshipping business.

As you can see, dropshipping is essentially a hands-off business. This means you will only need capital to fund your online operation and few resources, primarily your laptop and smart devices.

You will also need to cultivate and maintain a proper attitude going in because, like any form of business, both eCommerce or brick or mortar stores, there will certainly be ups and downs.

In the next sections, let’s discuss how profitable dropshipping business or let’s get to whether it is really dead as others claim…

How profitable dropshipping business?

One of the biggest attractions of dropshipping is that you don’t necessarily have to worry about inventory management and any operating expenses.

However, this doesn’t mean that it’s going to be smooth sailing all throughout. You have to remember that the top dropshipping stores today didn’t reach the level of success they’re currently enjoying without any challenges and disappointments along the way.

But once you find your winning formula, it can significantly boost your profits.

However, how profitable is dropshipping? Realistically?

Yes, dropshipping can lead you to significant income if you have the right tools at hand and the proper mindset, to begin with.

It’s basically a low-risk business model since you don’t directly come in contact with the products.

There are many dropshippers who are making about $100,000 a year. And if you’re aiming to earn this much as well, you need to craft your strategy effectively.

Some of the common factors that you can find in successful dropshipping businesses include the following—

  • They were able to find a reliable supplier

  • They were able to find the perfect product to sell in your niche

These are the only basic, but if you need more guidance regarding dropshipping, you can book a FREE 45-minute mentorship session with me, and let’s see how I can help you with your online business.

Why is dropshipping not dead?

The mechanics of operating a dropshipping business is relatively easy to comprehend and straightforward.

What we mean by this is the mechanics in operating the business. But you have to understand that your store may offer the best products or contents around, but what good it would be if nobody is buying it or referring to your contents.

Yes, in some sense, it is easy. But there’s another consideration you have to bear in mind, and that is your marketing strategy.

Advertising or promoting your products is one area where some dropshippers commit errors. They fail to gain any traction, and that’s the reason why they say it’s dead.

Or, people who say that dropshipping is dead are individuals who haven’t really tried them and merely relying on opinions they saw on YouTube or read anywhere online.

Again, let me reiterate that there’s no solid foundation on this, and their perspective on the entire idea of dropshipping may have been based on few personal experiences.

If we refer to the statistics, we see a very different story, as you’ll see below—

So yes, as you can see, there’s a significant increase in the trends from 2013 up to the present. And the growth of eCommerce is predicted to continuously grow up to 2023, according to statista.com.

And that is how a profitable dropshipping business can be, and it can’t be dead if you look at the statistics above.

The best online merchant to partner with

Another common concern most startup dropshipper face is the online merchant that they can partner with.

Of course, there are several options, but the most popular platform around is AliExpress. They are a Chinese company that offers online retail services.

And when we think of dropshipping, AliExpress might be the first thing that comes to mind.

However, you can also use other eCommerce platforms like eBay and Amazon if you prefer them.

To set things straight, you could partner with any retailers you can think of. But each of them has its own set of policies that may limit how you use their platform.

AliExpress is commonly utilized by many dropshippers because it’s pretty easy to use. The overall feature is user-friendly. Also, they do not have any upfront fees, which means that you can perform product testing without any huge spending.

What are the common struggles of dropshippers?

There are many reasons why dropshipper fails to meet their personal expectations.

And there are three basic factors why such instance occurs, and it includes the following—

Competition

If you’ve failed to do your research in thoroughly studying your demographics, then you just increase the likelihood of you falling far behind the competition.

As Benjamin Franklin once said, “Failing to plan is planning to fail.”

It might seem arduous work at first, but it is something that you have to do if you are to run a successful dropshipping business.

To get ahead, you need to study your competitors and observe what they’re doing right. You can adapt some of their techniques and tweak them a little bit. And then, apply them into your business, benchmarking if you will, but never copy someone else’s creative work.

You can use applications such as Word Count and Commerce Inspector to analyze your competitors’ marketing strategy.

Delivery period

Yup, this is a common problem in dropshipping that will cause you a lot of headaches. I can assure you that.

Since the parcels are mostly coming from China, you can expect a 2 to 4 week delivery period. During such time, it is very likely that you will receive customer queries regarding the delivery status.

I’m pretty sure that you’re going to receive comments that may not be appropriate, to say the least, and hurtful at some time.

With this being said, it is important that you have to focus on establishing quality customer service to cater to their concerns.

If you don’t mind spending a little higher, then you can use ePacket delivery. It will save you a lot of time compared to the standard delivery, but it may result in a huge expense if you rely on them.

If you ask for refunds, you can comply with what they ask for if you feel that their outburst is no longer healthy for you.

Or, if you can tolerate your customers’ emotions and wants to save more money, you can try to convince them not to cancel or return the products.

Again, it may depend on your outstanding customer service skills.

Errors committed by a third-party supplier

Another problem that you may encounter is errors committed by the supplier or manufacturer. Such issues may include product defects, wrong items, or damaged items due to the delivery or packaging process, and the list goes on.

For this scenario, it all again relies on the capability of your customer service agents.

Let me repeat the point I mentioned in the last section, if you don’t mind the inconveniences linked to this event, then you can comply with your customers’ request to save yourself of stress.

Or, you can concentrate on providing quality customer service to maximize your profits by convincing them not to return the products and offer them deals on their next purchase.
